Jean DuJardin was only able to win an Oscar for "The Actor" because Oscar voters were shielded from a joke about 9/11 in his latest French-language film, a report claims.
DuJardin won the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his role in the hit silent movie. But what voters would not have known is that a potentially catastrophic joke about the 2001 terror attacks on New York was dropped from "Les Infidels" ("The Players") -- a movie he produced, starred and co-wrote -- to avoid offending Oscar voters ahead of the big night.
In the movie, DuJardin, 39, plays an unfaithful New York husband. In one scene at a hotel, he is pictured on the phone in front of a window telling his wife "Yes, yes, my darling, everything is fine!" as a plane flies into the World Trade Center in the background.
Critics have said the sketch "could have been fatal" to his chances of success.
A French magazine reported: "'The actor and co-producer of 'Les Infideles' indeed feared that the world of American cinema would take offense to the short scene."
DuJardin is promoting the movie in Paris now following his big Oscar win.
