Who will take the gold? Fox411's Dr. Oscar offers Best Picture predictions

The Academy Awards are often described as Hollywood’s Super Bowl. This year, that may actually be an understatement.

But rest assured. If you’re looking for some guidance as you prepare for your office Oscar pool, you’ve come to the right place. For the past four years, Fox 411 has provided some of the most accurate predictions on the web. This year, we plan to do it again.

Today, we take a look at the Best Picture category. Let's take a look at the odds.

BEST PICTURE

THE NOMINEES: ”The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “The Help,” “Hugo,” Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball,” “The Tree of Life” and “War Horse”

PREDICTION: “The Artist”

Last year the Best Picture race featured a real battle between early favorite “The Social Network” and eventual winner “The King’s Speech.”

This year, “The Artist” took an early lead and managed to maintain it throughout the awards season.  First came the New York Film Critics trophy, followed by the Golden Globe (Comedy or Musical) and the Producers Guild Award.

With an impressive ten Oscar nominations, it finished one behind rival “Hugo.” But the latter failed to score a single acting nod while “The Artist” earned two – a significant note because actors make up the largest branch of the Academy.

True, a black & white silent film with no major stars seems like an odd choice for the top Oscar. However, the absurdity has turned into an asset – the film seems like a genuine novelty. It has drawn strong reviews across the board and even those who don’t love it seem to admire it.

Can any other picture somehow score an upset? I’ll leave answer that with silence, just like “The Artist.”

Check back this week for more of Dr. Oscar's predictions. Tune into Fox411.com Sunday at 7 p.m. to watch our live coverage of the Oscars red carpet.
