Fox News looks at remarkable career of Glen Campbell and his battle with Alzheimer's

Fox News takes a look back at the career of country music legend Glen Campbell on the special “Glen Campbell Fights Alzheimer's,”  hosted by Shepard Smith.

The special, airing Feb. 18 at 10 p.m. EDT, features interviews with Campbell and his family.

The “Rhinestone Cowboy” singer, who announced last year that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, said he would be retiring from music after embarking on a goodbye tour that took him through Europe and North America.

The special offers an inside look at how Campbell, 75, performs on stage each night, despite his battle against the disease that affects more than 10 million Americans.

“You can’t cry over spilled milk,” Campbell tells Fox News of his diagnosis. “[You] get on with your life and enjoy it.”

Over the course of his career, Campbell sold 40 million records and won four Grammys in both country and pop music. Last Sunday, the Grammys hosted a special tribute to Campbell, with The Band Perry and Blake Shelton taking the stage to perform his songs “Gentle on My Mind,” “Southern Nights” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

His final album, “Ghost on the Canvas,” released last year, contains all new material.

His wife of nearly 30 years, Kim Woollen, tells Fox News that Campbell and his producer Julian Raymond began the process of writing the material three years ago.

“When they did the record 'Meet Glen Campbell,' the previous record, Julian would keep a journal of the things Glen would say to him throughout the day,” she said. “That was [roughly] three years ago and the Alzheimer's was present then but we didn’t know the diagnosis. I think the new songs reflect a lot of what he was going through and thinking and being in confusion and needing the people he loves around him more and more each day. Julian took those things and put them to music.”

The special also gives an inside look at how his music has helped him cope with the disease, the second most feared in the United States, just behind cancer.

“I don’t pay any attention to it,” he said. “It’s like when the devil comes knocking on your door. Don’t pay any attention to it.”

The special will also look at how Alzheimer's impacts patients’ loved ones, with commentary from TV personality Leeza Gibbons and Maria Shriver.
