Matt Damon: Public Health Is Everyone's Responsibility

Will Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” ignite a nation of germophobes this weekend?

The highly-anticipated thriller is based on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to deal with the outbreak. But as the fast-moving pandemic spreads across the world, society is torn apart and the international medical community is in a race against time to find a cure and control the escalating and dangerous panic.

“It’s scary, the science is really accurate in the movie and that’s what we were trying to create – an authentic pandemic, something that could really happen,” star Matt Damon told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column.

But above all, Damon hopes audiences walk away with one clear talking point.

“If people come out with the notion that public health is everyone’s responsibility, than that’s a good take away,” he continued. “But one optimistic thing both Scott (Burns, writer) and Steven (Soderbergh) said was getting to know the people who work out at the CDC and how heroic and smart and competent and capable they are. They on just on it, they are gaming this stuff all the time and we have a great line of defense going for us.”

And despite having spent months on the movie set submerged by alarming realities about what is lurking on every surface, railing and sidewalk, Damon is convinced his star-studded lifestyle of jet-settraveling and constant meet and greets keeps him safe from anything too sinister.

“My immune system is so strong now, I can’t get sick,” he added. “I wash my hands more now than I used too, but that’s a sensible thing to do in New York City.”
