Michael Showers, an actor who had a recurring role as a police officer in the HBO series "Treme," was found dead in the Mississippi River, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Thursday.

The body of the 45-year-old was pulled from the water near the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Showers, a native of nearby Chalmette, La., was spotted by a steamboat captain Wednesday morning, according to the report.

The local coroner's office said it appeared Showers' body had been in the water for about two days.

Showers played police captain John Guidry on "Treme," an HBO drama set in New Orleans in the months after Hurricane Katrina.

"Michael Showers was a fine actor who contributed his talents to our drama in the warmest and most professional way," "Treme" co-creator David Simon said in a statement from HBO.

"We enjoyed his work -- and working with him. Going forward, we're going to miss having him as part of our production. All of which seems of little import in light of the loss of a man's whole life, and what that loss truly means to him, his family, his friends. Our respect and condolences go to them, especially," the statement added.

Actor Wendell Pierce tweeted, "Rest In Peace to my costar Micheal Showers. "Capt Guidry" on TREME. He will be a lasting part of our New Orleans story and television history."

Showers had also appeared in "Breaking Bad" and "The Vampire Diaries," along with the film "I Love You Phillip Morris."
