Cyrus, 18, will play the lead role in the film, the plot of which reportedly revolves around a broken promise to God. The film's title and further details about the plot have not yet been released.
Her mother, Tish Cyrus, will co-produce the movie, which is based on a screenplay by writers Sam Brown and Jack Angelo.
Former Disney star Cyrus is no stranger to controversy. Photos emerged Monday of her smoking a cigarette, prompting one fan to tweet, "I don't wanna see her in 5 years doing drugs or like Amy Winehouse."
The star declared in her 2009 autobiography "Miles to Go" that she would "never smoke."
Cyrus also sparked a debate on Twitter over the weekend when she posted pictures of her new tattoo in support of gay rights. The equal sign ink earned mixed ratings from her Twitter followers.
