Meredith Vieira Eyeing Exit From 'Today,' Report Says

Meredith Vieira

Meredith Vieira said to be eyeing an exit from NBC's "Today" show this fall.

Vieira, who replaced Katie Couric in 2006, is expected to depart NBC's top-rated morning show when her contract expires in September.

"I would guess with all the stress she's under, in all likelihood, she's not going to continue," a high-placed source told The Post yesterday.

"It probably is time for her to just give it up. She's put so much heart and soul into that show . . . but it really has worn on her. It's emotionally draining."

Vieira, 57, also hosts the syndicated version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" -- and she may be ready to walk away from that show as well, the sources say.

Her contract with "Millionaire" is due to expire at the same time as her "Today" deal.

"It's all a matter of what's best for her family," the source said. "It's never been about anything but what works best for her family."

Reports of Vieira's expected exit from "Today" first broke yesterday in TV Guide.

News of her expected departure comes during the same week that Couric is reportedly set to leave "CBS Evening News."

Speculation about Couric returning to "Today" began almost immediately in the media trade press -- but she has said in the past that she is not interested in doing morning TV again.

Insiders say that Vieira and her bosses have been discussing her status for a while, but that she has refused so far to say she intends to come back.

Vieira earns an estimated $10 million on the "Today" show -- and more than that from "Millionaire."
