REVIEW: 'Hop' Doesn't Have Much Bounce

When you make a film as an animated comedy, it’s crucial not to leave out one of those components.

But there’s little that’s funny about “Hop,” and not much that’s animated.

Oh sure, the blend of computer-generated characters and live action is seamless. But that’s become the state of the art, so it’s hardly an achievement.

Otherwise, this limp holiday comedy is like a stale marshmallow treat, with jokes that have long since passed their “sell by” date. Even small children will find little to be tickled by here.

The story, such as it is, is about the next rabbit in line to be the Easter Bunny. His name is E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand) – and he wants to rock’n’roll, not devote his life to delivering candy, like his dad (voiced by Hugh Laurie).

So he escapes to Hollywood – where he literally runs into (or, more accurately, is run down by) a slacker named Fred (James Marsden), who also is having trouble finding a job he likes. They rub each other then wrong way for a while, then team up.

If you think an Easter basket full of jelly beans is packed with empty calories, you haven’t seen this film. Nor, for that matter, should you. It’s deadly dull, the kind of movie even a kid will have trouble embracing.
