Bob Geldoff Hates 'Do They Know It's Christmas' Charity Anthem

Bob Geldof

Bob Geldoff absolutely loathes the charity anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas.”

But it's not because Geldoff’s some modern-day Scrooge. It's because he wrote it!

“I am responsible for two of the worst songs in history. One is ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ and the other one is ‘We Are The World,’” he told the U.K. Daily Mail.

“Any day soon, I will go to the supermarket, head to the meat counter and it will be playing. Every f**ing Christmas,” the former Boomtown Rats singer griped.

While Geldoff, 59, is entitled to his opinion (and may have a point), the single was England’s biggest selling ever until it was knocked off by Elton John’s Princess Diana-inspired “Candle in the Wind.”

Current superstars Sting and Bono also sang on the track, as did ‘80s bigs like Duran Duran, George Michael and Phil Collins.

The song was recorded to raise money for famine stricken Ethiopia, and it did, raising over $200 million. It also spawned the aforementioned charity single in the U.S., “We Are the World,” co-written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson.
