The guy who drew it, drove it.

A 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda originally leased by the car’s designer, John Herlitz, is being auctioned and could fetch $3 million or more.

While its history is icing on the cake, the car itself is quite special and rare. Only 14 Cuda convertibles were built in 1970, and this is one of just nine that were fitted with a 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission.

The triple black muscle car has a Dual Quad 426/425 HP Hemi V-8 sticking out through its Shaker hood and nearly every option box filled in. Those include a Dana 4:10 rear end, Rallye wheels and gauges, power everything, luggage rack, and a squeeze-to-honk rim-blow steering wheel.

The car has been owned by a series of renowned Cuda collectors, and was restored in 2002. It’s set to cross the block at the Mecum Auctions Monterey event next week, where a pre-auction estimate of $2.5-$3.0 million puts it within striking distance of the $3.5 million muscle car record paid for a 1971 Cuda convertible last year.
