The jail sentence for Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi, who helped the US find Usama bin Laden is meant to deter others from cooperating with outside powers. His sentencing by Pakistani authorities is a shot across the bow of the United States, as well as a symbol of Pakistan’s displeasure with the state of ties between the two nations.
