Government regulations are supposed to protect the "little guy". But often regulations protect established interests, and hurt little guys. New York recently made it illegal for most people to offer short-term rentals via popular websites like Airbnb and Roomorama. In this week's syndicated column, I look at how the government stifles innovation and hurts the little guy.

Government is at war against the little guy. Bureaucrats pass thousands of pages of regulations every year to "keep people safer" and "make the marketplace more fair." Today there are 170,000 pages of federal regulations on the books. Break just one rule, and government may wreck your life.

Whatever happened to grit? My dictionary defines it as, "firmness of character"... "pluck"... "indomitable spirit". In this week's syndicated column, I look at how America's welfare state robs us of grit.

Then the government cracked down on those entrepreneurs. Regulators forced 27 bus companies based in Chinatown to close, according to Jim Epstein of Reason.

People vote with their feet. When one state does something stupid... people can leave that state and take their talent and money with them. In this week's syndicated column, I take a look at which states do it right (and gain people) and which ones strangle freedom.
This competition between states makes it possible for states to learn from each other's successes.

Each state has different rules, regulations and taxes. It's confusing... but it's also a good thing. It creates competition. When one state does something stupid... people can leave that state and take their talent and money with them.

Many people lazily assume that ObamaCare will do roughly what it promises: give insurance to the uninsured and lower the cost of health care. Don’t count on it.
